ABOUT THE SITE

Based in the UK, ReNew ELP is Mura’s first commercial-scale Hydro-PRT® advanced plastic recycling facility and over the course of a year will produce 20kta of circular hydrocarbon products, with future plans to treble the site’s annual output capacity.

The site, which commenced construction in March 2021, is the first commercial-scale advanced plastic recycling facility in the UK with a 20kta (kilotonnes per annum) production capacity, processing the equivalent annual plastic packaging waste of approximately 693,000 Britons[1] and also replacing the equivalent of c. 100,000 barrels of fossil oil in virgin plastic production[2].

The site’s feedstock of flexible and rigid mixed plastics, including films and plastic packaging, will be supplied by Geminor and Elite Recycling Solutions. Dow and Neste will use the products from Mura Wilton to replace fossil-based resources traditionally used in the plastics supply chain, contributing to a circular economy for plastic.

The site is operated by px Group who have been awarded a 10 year operation and  maintenance contract.

RENEW ELP, A SUBSIDIARY OF MURA TECHNOLOGY SITE FUNDING

The ReNew ELP site is funded by its parent company Mura Technology, with investment from our partners Dow, KBR and igus. In 2020, ReNew ELP was also awarded a £4.42 million grant from Innovate UK to help build this world’s first commercial-scale Hydro-PRT recycling plant. Focusing on the UK Government’s priority to drive economic growth through new technology, the award came via the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund’s Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging programme, recognising the commercial feasibility of the technology and potential of the advanced recycling sector to help meet ambitious plastic recycling targets. The site was also awarded a £5million equity investment from the UK Government’s Future Fund.

The development of the world’s first Hydro-PRT site at Wilton, Teesside, places the area on the map as frontrunners in the future of plastic recycling, drawing on a local skilled workforce, established feedstock suppliers and customers for our hydrocarbon products, vital infrastructure and utilities as part of the North-East Process Industry Cluster. The support of the Government via the £4.42 grant from Innovate UK in 2020 demonstrated that we are in line with the drive towards increasing recycling targets in the UK, alongside strengthening investor confidence. During the lifespan of the project so far, we have appointed Wood as our Engineering, Procurement and Construction partner and Geminor as our Principal Feedstock Supplier. In addition, PX Group were awarded a 10 year Operations and Maintenance contract, continuing our utilisation of local specialists. The team are excited to see the project through to completion in 2024 and look forward to demonstrating this innovative process at global level.
