A new article by Nina Notman of Chemistry World was published this week, outlining the rise of chemical recycling and the exciting and fast-moving progress made across the board between a number of companies and technologies – including ReNew ELP’s use of Catalytic Hydrothermal Reactor (Cat-HTR™) technology to build an 80,000 tonne per year capacity site at Teesside, in the North East of England.
As discussed in the article, a number of different chemical recycling technologies are being applied to the polymer recycling of plastic, the majority of which use a pyrolysis model, which converts plastic using heat in the absence of oxygen. The
(Cat-HTR™) technology is unique however, in that it uses supercritical water as the main element to convert plastic. Sourcing post-consumer household plastic as feedstock, the technology uses the water to break down the chemical make up of plastic, donating hydrogen to form new bonds, and create four new products including naphtha, which can then be used in the production of new plastic, creating a circular economy and greatly reducing not just the quantity of plastic going to landfill, incineration and EfW (Energy from Waste), but also reducing dependency of fossil resource for the production of new plastics, a material humankind has come to rely on for the preservation of food, medicine and a more hygienic lifestyle.

ReNew ELP’S Managing Director Richard Daley was pleased to contribute to the article, highlighting the technology’s adaptability when it comes to intaking mixed plastics, without the need for intensive pre-sorting, which is both time and cost consuming, quoting target feedstock as ‘plastics that are too contaminated or too mixed for traditional mechanical recycling’.
